Researchers at the Yale Applied Science Synthesis Program (YASSP) are working on today’s most pressing questions about sustainable forest, rangeland, wetland, and agroecosystem management. We work closely with practitioner partners to develop cutting-edge research questions and we provide transparent and robust synthesis and analysis of the best available science to develop practical answers. Read about our projects at the links below.
YASSP Farm Projects
YASSP Farm Projects explore agricultural land management practices in agroecosystems to better understand soil carbon: impacts management practices have on soil carbon sequestration and methods for quantifying and monitoring soil carbon. Our noteworthy publications from these projects include:
- Testing the feasibility of quantifying change in agricultural soil carbon stocks through empirical sampling. Geoderma (2023).
- A synthesis of the effect of regenerative agriculture on soil carbon sequestration in Southeast Asian croplands. Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment (2023).
- Research design, statistics and soil carbon: Responses to von Haden et al. and Spertus. Geoderma (2024).
- Greenhouse gas mitigation on croplands: clarifying the debate on knowns, unknowns and risks to move forward with effective management interventions. Carbon Management (2024).
- The importance of accounting method and sampling depth to estimate changes in soil carbon stocks. Carbon Balance and Management (2024).
YASSP Forest Projects
YASSP Forest projects include work to quantify negative emission potential and sustainable forest management practices so they can continue to provide critical resources and habitat. YASSP Forest Projects explore forest ecosystems as a powerful climate sequestration solution to address global climate change and how forest management activties impact carbon sequestration. Our noteworthy publications from these projects include:
- Mitigating near-term climate change. Environmental Research (2023).
- Roads to Removal: Options for Carbon Dioxide Removals in the United States. 2024.
- Climate Now Podcast, “Episode 131: Roads to CO2 Removal”
